Monitor- Veto King Dethroned
Print This Post
Former Congress and NH Supreme Court Justice Chuck Douglas writes to the Concord Monitor to share his experience in an earlier role, legal counsel to Governor Mel Thomson.
When it comes to vetoes, Grant Bosse’s column mentioned that data was not available back to a period before the 1980s. Nonetheless, the reigning veto king until John Lynch this year was none other than Meldrim Thomson Jr., a Republican. I was legal counsel to Mel in 1973 when he vetoed 28 bills during the month of June. As memory serves me, they were all sustained. And that was when Mel was disagreeing with a Republican House and a Republican Senate. From 1973 to 2012 Mel was the veto champion, but now Lynch ekes him out by one veto.
